Legal Advocacy Officer - Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI)



VHAI is implementing a comprehensive health promotion and tobacco control programme at the national and state levels across several settings in the country. VHAI is also a major publisher of advocacy materials on health, gender, health promotion, tobacco control and development issues. VHAI invites applications for the post of: 

Legal Advocacy Officer (Part Time/Full Time)

Applicants should have a post-graduate degree in law from a recognised University with a minimum of 2-3 years of experience of working under a senior lawyer or law firm. He/she should be able to demonstrate requisite knowledge and ability in handling legal work. He/she should have at least 4-5 years of experience of working with a good solicitors firm on human rights issues and/or health issues. He/she should also possess excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to negotiate


The selected candidate will be expected to:
- interpret and understand the tobacco control legislation in India (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act) and pro-actively assist in taking VHAI's legal advocacy work forward 
- Analyse and provide guidance on other laws related to tobacco workers such as laws related to bidi workers, child labour, etc
- Provide legal advice on a range of legislative and advocacy matters to the team. 
- Brief, monitor and coordinate with counsel in matters of litigation on behalf of VHAI, attend court hearings as required 
- Prepare and review drafts of petitions 
- Assess new developments on the legal front by thoroughly checking notifications, amendments to current law 
- Work actively with the advocacy team on presenting/advocating on crucial legal aspects of current priorities and issues of concern
