1. POSITION VACANT: Eye Donation Counselor cum Eye Recovery Technician, King George’s Medical University (KGMU) UP Community Eye Bank, SightLife, Lucknow

Headquartered at Seattle, WA-USA, SightLife is the only non-profit global health organization, focused solely on eliminating corneal blindness.
Working with surgeons in over 30 countries, SightLife and its Global Partners restore sight to more than 20 men, women, and children each day. This is accomplished through eye banks, which are centres for the recovery and placement of eye tissue used in cornea transplants.

SightLife’s mission is to eliminate corneal blindness globally, through partnerships with eye banks in developing countries, where 90% of the world’s 10 million persons, estimated to suffer from curable corneal blindness, live.
SightLife constituted a small team of senior management and distribution professionals in India in 2010 for this purpose and building on the organization’s global expertise, has successfully implemented a comprehensive program to support the development of eye banks and corneal surgeons, across India.

As a part of its ongoing efforts at strengthening the infrastructure and management of eye banks across the country, SightLife is overseeing operations of the King George’s Medical University’s (KGMU), Community Eye Bank in UP, for a period of six years. In the context of the above, SightLife, is facilitating the recruitment of an Eye Donation Counsellor cum Eye Recovery Technician by the Eye Bank. (Note: Eye Bank staff shall be employed by a third party agency).
3. JOB DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
The post-holder shall be responsible for counselling families after the passing away of a loved one, educating them about eye/ cornea donation, answering questions and obtaining legal consent on eye/ cornea donation. S/he shall also be responsible for the surgical recovery of human eye tissue for transplant and/or research and the collection of necessary medical, behavioral, laboratory and other data, to ensure quality donor screening.
Key Job Responsibilities:
(1) Providing support to grieving family members in hospital wards and other locations, as necessary;
(2) Effectively educating family members about eye/ cornea donation, answering questions and obtaining legal consent for eye/ cornea donation;
(3) Performing efficient and quality surgical recovery of human eye tissue for transplant and/ or research;
(4) Collecting complete and accurate medical charts, behavioural data, laboratory data, blood specimens, and other pertinent data from the recovery site and other appropriate agencies;
(5) Travelling throughout the assigned recovery area to collect eye tissue and medical records;
(6) Representing the KGMU UP Community Eye Bank in hospital, funeral home, and transplant/ donation settings;
(7) Performing scheduled donor recoveries;
(8) Performing timely transportation of eye tissue to and from airport and surgeon’s facilities as needed;
(9) Performing other projects and duties as assigned;
(10) Ensuring all quality standards of the Eye Bank Association of India and SightLife are met prior to distribution;
(11) Strive to support the Mission, Vision and Values of the Eye Bank.
4. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES: 
Qualification:
(1) Applicants must be graduates in any discipline from a reputed institution; 
(2) Applicants with a degree in Biology, or other medical field, with academic and/or practical experience in anatomy, including dissections, will be at an advantage;
(3) Candidates with undergraduate qualifications in optometry or nursing will be preferred.
Experience:
Applicants must have at least one year of relevant work experience in counselling or other related healthcare, medical fields.
Skills and Competencies:
(1) Excellent communication skills, with fluency in Hindi;
(2) A personal commitment to organ and tissue donation is required;
(3) Unquestionable ethics and integrity;
(4) Willing to work nights, weekends and on-call as required by operational needs;
(5) Willing to travel within India for training approximately two weeks per year;
5. COMPENSATION OFFERED:
The gross remuneration budgeted for the position is attractive. Offers shall be commensurate with the qualifications, experience and salary history, of the selected candidate.
