OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

I. Background

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) is UNESCO\'s first education-related category 1 institute in the Asia and the Pacific region towards the development and promotion of new approaches to education for a more peaceful and sustainable world. The Institute aims to contribute to the conceptualization, design and formulation of regional and sub-regional strategies in education for peace and sustainable development, in particular through South-South and triangular NorthSouth-South cooperation. MGIEP plans to provide an integrated approach to education for peace and sustainable development.

This Post seeks specific specialisation and expertise in education for peace or related areas. It is envisaged that the appointed candidates will make a substantial contribution to MGIEP\'s approach to promote a comprehensive understanding of peace, sustainable development and global citizenship through education.


Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Director of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development and under the direct supervision of the Senior Project Officer the incumbent shall assist in the implementation and management of programme of MGIEP based in New Delhi, in particular:


  • Coordinate, manage and monitor the implementation of the Peace Education, within a broader framework of Peace and sustainable development, Regular Programme activities and extrabudgetary projects;

  • Establish and maintain contact with Regional Office and Ministries on Education with a view to support their capacity building for the planning and implementation of peace education programmes at all levels of the education system;

  • Identify and coordinate analytical studies an action-oriented research on educational developments in the region, especially in education policy and practice in Education for Peace and overall alignment with education programme development and management;

  • Identify and analyse Regional information and reports in line with global developments and international commitments for advocacy, advocating outcomes with management;

  • Implement, coordinate, monitor and advocate for Projects related to Education for peace and sustainable development.

  • Consult and liaise with multilateral and bilateral development partners to develop joint projects, programmes and activities related to the education for peace with particular emphasis on resource mobilisation and determine implementation strategy.

  • Prepare and contribute to the information presented on the Institute\'s website and elsewhere.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Advanced University degree (Master or equivalent) in education development, education planning and management, or any social science related to education.
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • At least 4 years of professional experience, acquired at national and/or international leval, in education development, particularly in one of the following areas: peace education, education sector analyses, governance, planning, policy, management and implementation.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a team and multi-cultural environment;

  • Good analytical skills and logical mindset to produce solid situation analysis and formulate options and recommendations;

  • Sound knowledge of the general and education-specific situations in the Asia Pacific region;

  • Good supervisory skills Strong writing and editing skills to communicate information and knowledge into various formats;
LANGUAGES
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language would be considered as an asset.
BENEFITS AND ENTITLEMENTS

UNESCO\'s salaries are calculated in US dollars and exempt from income tax. They consist of a basic salary and a post adjustment which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station and exchange rates. Other benefits include: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, home travel, education grant for dependent children, pension plan and medical insurance. Please note that UNESCO is a non-smoking Organization.
