Project Brief:

A demographic transition has been observed all across the world with a strong trend towards global population ageing. As life expectancy increases around the world, it is a priority to determine if more of the extra years being added are healthy years, or years that are likely to be spent in poor health. This is especially important for Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) of the world which are home to almost two thirds of the world’s population and are characterised by widespread inequalities in health across the entire spectrum of socioeconomic hierarchy. This study intends to analyse the social inequalities and social gradients, often referred to as the ‘’causes of the causes’’ for Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and whether similarities exist in the socio-economic patterning of NCDs in India and other LMICs.
