PHFI is headquartered in New Delhi with national presence through its constituent units of regional Indian Institutes of Public Health (IIPHs) and Centres of Applied Research in core public health themes. Project Brief:

As political will has converged onto the path towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals, increasing attention is being paid to the Social Determinants of Health (SDH), “the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system.” In India, efforts (to characterize and) to act on SDH have been fragmented and ad hoc, even as India has played a key role in mobilising recognition of SDH on the international stage. A number of programmes have been piloted, scaled, and rolled out by statal and nonstatal actors alike, but we have no consolidation or macro-level picture of what these efforts entailed.

To address these challenges, we propose the creation of an Indian Knowledge Network on the Social Determinants of Health. Over the upcoming ten months, workshops will be held to build capacity on linking SDH to other key discourses in India (including related to gender, equity, and human rights), ongoing processes of policy formulation (like Universal Health Coverage reform, and convergence mechanisms at the national, state and other levels) and advocacy. Activities include desk and field based research (proposal design, data collection, analysis and reporting), the convening of workshops with national and international stakeholders, as well as advocacy and networking.
