We are
seeking an experienced, dynamic, innovative, self-motivated, and
results-oriented social scientist to develop and lead CIMMYT’s Foresight and
Targeting research strategy and team. CIMMYT’s research-for-development (R4D)
aims to improve the livelihoods of poor maize and wheat farmers and consumers
across the developing world in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The position
focuses on developing and using applied social science foresight and targeting
tools to help prioritize, guide and target R4D investments for maximum impact
for CIMMYT and the MAIZE and WHEAT Consortium Research Programs. You will
explore future wheat and maize needs and translate these into innovation
investments needs and innovation adaptation requirements. You will also explore
current innovation investments and opportunities and assess their likely future
impact. The position contributes to and draws on the experiences of a large multi-disciplinary
R4D team working for CIMMYT across the target continents. You will work as a
member of CIMMYT’s Socio-Economics Program in close collaboration with CIMMYT’s
other programs and with local and international partners.

The
position will be based in Mexico at CIMMYT’s headquarters (located 45 km
northeast of Mexico City, Mexico). Frequent travel to rural intervention areas
in Africa, Asia and Latin America is required.
Specific
duties of this position include:
·
Assess future wheat and maize needs (production, consumption,
value chains) in the developing world and translate these into innovation
investments needs and adaptation requirements.
·
Analyze agricultural transformation, productivity change, resource
use, sustainability and the drivers of change and uncertainty in maize and
wheat-based farming systems to inform investment needs and policy.
·
Assess potential impacts of wheat and maize pipeline technologies
for such a future dynamic world.
·
Enhance targeting by disaggregating future wheat and maize needs
and potential impacts – both spatially and by socio-economic strata (including
poverty, gender and socially disadvantaged groups).
·
Develop and use applied social science foresight and targeting
tools to help prioritize, guide, target and update R4D investments for maximum
impact in a dynamic setting.
·
Develop a global strategic research agenda for foresight &
targeting.
·
Lead CIMMYT’s Foresight and Targeting research strategy and team
and build up the associated funding base.
·
Publish findings in international peer reviewed journals.
We are
seeking candidates with the following academic qualifications, skills and
attitudes:
·
PhD in agricultural economics, development economics, or a related
field from a recognized institution.
·
At least 10 years of relevant foresight and targeting research,
including the development and use of one or more associated tools and processes
(including investment prioritization, ex ante impact assessment,
medium-to-longer term scenario development, spatial analysis, and stakeholder
analysis).
·
Extensive experience with quantitative research approaches,
including modeling skills and relevant software use.
·
Experience in developing and leading a research strategy and team
and mobilizing R4D funding.
·
Proven leadership-, interpersonal-, and cross-cultural skills,
including ability to effectively interact with diverse audiences, stakeholders,
colleagues and disciplines and to work with and motivate multi-disciplinary
teams and to develop strong and effective working relationships with partners.
·
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
·
A high degree of personal organization and the ability to multi-task
and work under pressure, as well as travel extensively.
·
Established publication record in international peer-reviewed
journals.
The
position is for an initial fixed-term contract of 3 years, after which further
employment is subject to performance and the continued availability of funds.
