Amnesty International,
made up of millions of individual members and supporters, is a truly global
human rights movement. It is made up of people who are passionate about
defending human rights for all, and who believe the world would be a better
place if together we took injustice personally.
And by mobilising the
humanity in everyone, shining a light on human rights abuses wherever they may
occur and speaking truth to power, for over 50 years now we have been making a
tangible difference in the lives of those who are denied their basic rights,
every hour, every day.
Amnesty International
South Africa is seeking a high-profile, inspirational and experienced Director
who is able to lead and grow our operations in South Africa and represent the
organization externally to deliver positive change in the human rights
situation nationally, regionally and globally.
About the Role
As Executive Director
of Amnesty International South Africa you will deliver inspirational leadership
that drives real change and make a significant impact on the human rights
landscape of South Africa. Working closely with the newly established regional
office in Johannesburg you will create a strong strategic presence based on
large numbers of committed members - donors and activists - speaking up for
human rights. You will be responsible for developing, coordinating and
implementing strategies, operational plans and budgets for the work of Amnesty
International South Africa, and for delivering a human rights plan of action
for the country. It’s a plan that will see you grow a strong and active member
base, energise activists, build transformative partnerships and create powerful
campaigns.
Externally, the
Director will be responsible for building national relationships and Amnesty
International’s profile in South Africa. The Director will represent Amnesty
International at a senior level with the South Africa government and others.
About You
With a proven
longstanding commitment to human rights and demonstrable knowledge of
political, economic and social trends in South Africa, you will possess a deep
understanding of challenges faced by activist organizations and have a deep
understanding of the civil society landscape in which they operate. You will
have a strong track record of senior level leadership and management success,
preferably in an international organization, and experience of effectively
lobbying governments and intergovernmental agents for policy change.
You will have strong
strategic, analytical and people management skills. You will be able to
effectively manage complex relationships and will have established a reputation
as a highly credible and effective leader of change.
You will have
exemplary oral and written communication skills. Fluency in English is
essential for success in this role.
About Us
Our aim is simple: to
bring the world closer to a place where human rights are enjoyed by all.
Independent, international and influential, we campaign for justice, freedom
and truth wherever they’re denied. Already our network of over three million
members and supporters is making a difference in 150 countries. And whether
we’re applying pressure through powerful research or direct lobbying, mass
demonstrations, human rights education, or online campaigning, we’re all
inspired by hope for a better world. One where human rights are respected and
protected by everyone, everywhere.
