Job Title: Team Leader
GRM Job Reference: TH-05754-PRJ
Region: Africa
Country: Nigeria
Location: Abuja, Nigeria
Apply by: 15 May 2014
Background:
Nigeria has
the largest number of poor people in sub-Saharan Africa: 84.5% of Nigerians –
133m people – live on less than USD 2 per day. Inequality has risen in the
last decade, and the position of women is particularly unequal. Rural
households are the poorest in Nigeria and therefore poverty will not be
reduced without a focus on agriculture and rural enterprise. Poverty in
the north of the country is worst: 77% or people live on less than USD1.25
per day, compared to 69% nationally. In the bulk of health
and education indicators, northern states
rank lower than their southern counterparts. Northern
Nigeria is also vulnerable to severe climatic impacts and, increasingly, to
conflict and insecurity.
Propcom
Mai-Karfi is a DFID funded (£25m) programme that aims to increase the incomes
of poor men and women in northern Nigeria by: (a) stimulating sustainable,
pro-poor growth in selected rural markets; and, (b) improving the position of
poor men and women within these market systems, to make them more inclusive
for poor people. GRM International manages the programme on behalf of
DFID. The programme will promote improvements in up to eight market
systems that have the potential to create sustainable economic opportunity
for the poor. These are likely to include: fertilizer, tractors,
seed, soy, soap, grain storage and poultry. The programme started
in January 2012 and is already fully operational.
Propcom
Mai-karfi has the potential to sustainably and significantly improve the
livelihoods of over 500,000 poor people in Northern Nigeria. It
is expected that the programme will deliver the following results:
